Spring in Schöneberg

By Ruben

GERMANY – While my solo explorations of Berlin usually took me to far-flung suburbs, weekend outings with a friend of mine who was born and raised in Berlin took me to the kind of place Berliners like. As they are rather fond of their parks, one such place was Volkspark Schöneberg-Wilmersdorf in the south of the city. Retrospectively posted on 2019-08-08.

The low structure in the foreground contains the Rathaus Schöneberg U-Bahn station, which has to be one of the most nicely situated metro stations in Berlin:

The Rathaus (city hall) itself stands behind the station. It was built between 1911 and 1914, and partly rebuilt following WW2. It was also West Berlin’s city hall from 1949 to 1990, and is famous for being the setting of John F. Kennedy’s 1962 ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ speech:

As you can see on these pictures, Berliners come out in droves to enjoy their parks as soon as the sun is shining:

A last picture of the Rathaus (sadly, most of the other buildings surrounding the park are in the rather boring and functional style typical of much of the former West Germany):

Though most of the buildings around the park are modern and functional, this area has its fair share of elaborate pre-war buildings. This is the Goethe Gymnasium, which was built as the Bismarck Gymnasium in the early twentieth century:
